It’s the eve before Christmas eve. I am sitting in my grandparents sunroom, waiting for the second half of our family to arrive from Chicago any minute. The house is swelling with anticipation. My grandfather naps in one room. Ben showers in another. Adrianne’s voice sings in chorus with my parents bickering about the bread in the oven. I’ve just lost two games of wingspan. A squirrel appears in the window I’m facing. We say hello with our eyes for a brief moment. Ben just came in to inform me that it’s about to be Lit In The Place. Oh boy.
I always get anxious around the holidays, for all the typical reasons. Family dynamics. Spending too much money. Being single around a bunch of engaged cousins. Not enough alone time. I hope to disappear at some point during the madness to go look for a certain vermillion flycatcher that’s been evading me all week. But despite all that, I know I will be sad when it’s over. In an effort to stay level-headed around my family, instead of regressing to a teenage bitch, I’ve been trying to listen to music that will calm my nervous system lol. Besides Adrianne’s Live at Revolution Hall being on repeat, I’ve also been looping some more Christmas-appropriate selections.
“A Charlie Brown Christmas” - Vince Guaraldi
Someday At Christmas - Stevie Wonder
Singles of the Week
Not Cute Anymore - ILLIT
Perpetuum - Anthony Romaniuk
Superscar (Sonikku Remix) - Adela
It’s Christmas Eve now. I’m hiding away in a quiet room and thinking of you my readers, wondering where you are and how you’re spending the holidays. I’m wearing shorts because it’s 70 degrees and I’m trying to recover from being uncomfortably full for 3 days straight. But my ideal self is sitting by an open fire (with a loved one?) and it’s snowing outside. My love for those close to my heart is floating into space to dance in the night sky before coming back down and drifting through the cracks under your doors.
From the stars,
MP
