I write to you from a 2 hour american airlines flight that feels like it might be the longest flight of my life. It is dark outside, my nose is pink (if not red), and I’m popping lemon mint ricolas like they’re zyns and I just stopped smoking. I send up a silent prayer of thanks that the seat next to me is empty. With each sniffle, I feel myself slipping away from coherent thought. I cling onto music, as I often do, in hopes that it will delay impending delirium. With that, here are my album picks from the last few days.
When I Paint My Masterpiece - Ada Lea
I was lucky enough to convince my cousins to go to her Chicago show. It was full of what Robby calls “logan square fucks”. lmao. Her clear vocals cut through the smoky haze of a city night and bar chatter. This album will be a fond memory for me of walking the streets at night and stumbling from laughter. And we got the set list!
Midnight Machines- Lights
Ellie brought up Lights this weekend, and I was immediately transported to a past life. I hadn’t listened to this album since high school and am so glad it’s come back around to me. It reminds me of long drives in the car with my dad in the Scottish Highlands. I used to watch the heather (Calluna vulgaris) filled landscapes through rain tracks on the window and wonder about my future self to these songs. What a strange feeling to be the one looking back at her now.
Willouhgby Tucker, I’ll Always Love You - Ethel Cain
Malia and I listened to this album while walking through the alakaʻi together this summer, which was no less than a religious experience. She was not able to go to the show with me and Ellie in Chicago, but while Ethel’s angelic voice floated into the air around us, she was certainly there in spirit. I cried during Waco, Texas duh.
See you guys on the other side of the runny nose dark hole. Hope I make it out in one piece.
